About Us

What we stand for

North London Collegiate School is a top independent day school for girls aged 4-18, which occupies a superb 30 acre site in Canons Park, North West London .Since its founding in 1850, generations of girls have received an ambitious academic education and formed a bond with NLCS, which lasts forever. We provide a carefully judged blend of support and challenge, a friendly and warm atmosphere, glorious facilities and extensive extra-curricular activities.

We are proud of our tradition of producing independent minded young women with the drive to make the most of opportunities and a difference in the world. That was the vision of the founder, Frances Mary Buss, in 1850, and it remains at the heart of the School’s ethos today.

We have a strong track record of enabling girls to gain entry to their first choice of university, but examination success is only part of the picture and passionate teachers inspire pupils with a love of their subject which goes beyond the examination syllabus.

NLCS celebrates the individual and creative spirit of the girls. We provide the springboard for our pupils to find their place in a world which will require not only technical skills, but also creative and communication skills to thrive. This is why we continue to invest in and enhance our music and arts provision and offer a wealth of sporting opportunities. Over 50 clubs and societies create a vibrant atmosphere which helps girls to develop a relaxed self-confidence and enjoy their time at Canons. To find their niche, to develop confidence and to succeed in whichever area they choose.

Every girl matters, the pastoral care at the school ensures students feel supported and valued throughout their time here. We encourage girls to be resilient and bounce back when faced with challenges or disappointments.

The best way to get to know the school is to come for a visit, experience the buzz and energy of the corridors, enjoy the stunning grounds and the Performing Arts Centre and, of course, meet the girls who make it such an exciting place to work and learn. You’ll be sure of a warm reception!

"We can’t recall visiting another all-girls school and finding quite this kind of relaxed self-confidence"
Good Schools Guide

"Academic and pastoral staff work closely together to ensure no girl is without support during her time at the School."

Work With Us

Teachers and support staff at NLCS find that working at one of the best schools in the UK is an enormously rewarding and motivating experience.

We aim to provide an ambitious education for all our students, and we employ passionate teachers who inspire our bright, curious and enthusiastic girls with a love of their subject.

Support staff at North London occupy a range of vital and valued positions. The School’s ability to function and perform outstandingly well depends on the work our non-teaching staff do.

We teach a broad, flexible curriculum which goes beyond exam requirements. All staff participate in the vibrant extra-curricular life of the school, and we offer an extensive range of clubs, societies, exchanges and trips to a variety of locations around the world.

North London enjoys a great degree of academic success, which is a testament to the subject expertise and passion of the teachers who work here. We regularly feature at the very top of academic league tables. Whilst examination success is only part of the picture at NLCS, joining our team of teachers in this aspirational environment provides a first class career opportunity.

Professional development is a strong part of the culture at North London. Following the opening of our partner school, NLCS Jeju in South Korea, and a second school in Dubai, staff in the UK have opportunities to join the NLCS family and work abroad or visit our partner schools.

North London Collegiate School is committed to supporting colleagues that wish to begin a career in teaching, either as a first job following graduation or switching to teaching from another profession. We have an established partnership with the University of Buckingham through which we offer an on-the-job route to qualification, with no prior teaching experience required.

"I started my teaching journey here and it has been a huge privilege to be part of the North London community: working with such highly motivated students and their diverse interests is all a teacher can ask for."

"I love teaching the girls, they ask great questions and are so receptive and sparky in class debates...The vibrancy of NLCS, the range of extra-curricular clubs and Societies means that my day is so varied. In one day I could be going to see a visiting academic speak about the philosophical implications of Quantum Physics, to a Year 7 meeting of Young Philosophers, chaired by Year 12 students, to an editorial meeting of one of our student-written publications. Teaching at NLCS keeps me immersed in my subject, giving me the chance to delve deeper into my academic interests whilst helping to inspire my students to do the same."

"What makes the school unique is the level of academic ambition as well as the strong emphasis placed on pastoral care. My role as a form tutor is as important to me as my role as an MFL teacher and Head of French. Smaller tutor groups enable us to get to know each and every girl very well and to see them progress and blossom over the years is a real pleasure."

"I love teaching at North London: the girls are so passionate and excited about learning new skills and trying out new ideas – every day brings me something new...NLCS is such a beautiful place to work, but what makes it special is the girls’ enthusiasm, for learning – it’s never questioned, but they are always questioning...As a teacher, I have always felt valued in this school – the senior team are keen to create an environment in which we can grow as professionals, but equally I feel trusted and enabled to do what I do best. Teaching at NLCS is therefore a joy."

"It is the girls who make teaching at North London so special; their ever-growing enthusiasm for the world around them and their will to discuss, question and learn about everything they encounter...Teaching students with the confidence to disagree with you and the ability to argue their points makes every day a new and exciting challenge. North London has not only given me the opportunity to be trained as a teacher, but so much more importantly allows me to find my own style and grow freely at the start of my career."

"I am lucky enough to teach English to students who are intellectually-curious, creative and receptive to new ideas. It is a joy to introduce them to a wide variety of Literature from different periods, and I learn greatly from their responses to texts."
